Eligibility Requirements
  • Meet the minimum academic and professional requirements (a bachelor’s degree or industry-related professional experience)


  • Possess high moral character and adhere to the ACFE Code of Professional Ethics

  • Pass the CFE exam (a minimum score of 40 is required to pass)
Work experience in the following fields is considered:
  • Accounting and Auditing:
    Accountants, internal and external auditors whose responsibilities include fraud detection and prevention.
  • Criminology and Sociology:
    Work experience in education or participation in fraud-related research in these fields.
  • Fraud Investigation:
    Investigating civil, criminal, or occupational fraud for law enforcement or in the private sector.
  • Loss Prevention:
    This may include security consultants or corporate/association directors involved in loss prevention.
  • Legal Field:
    Pertains to lawyers and attorneys handling fraud prosecution or litigation.
The CFE Exam:
  • Online (remote proctored): Taken from any location under the supervision of an online proctor.

  • In-person: Administered at authorized Prometric testing centers.


To take the CFE exam in either format, candidates must present a valid government-issued photo ID (e.g., passport, national ID card, or driver’s license).

Candidates have 60 days to complete all 4 exam sections.
The Certification Committee reviews the results.

Candidates receive notification of the certification decision within 3 weeks of completing the CFE exam.

  • 2-hour exam per section

  • 100 multiple-choice and True/False questions

  • Passing score: at least 75%

  • Exam fee: $450

  • Retake fee: $100 per failed section (maximum 3 attempts per section)

  • Results available within 1 hour

The CFE exam can be taken in two formats:
Maintaining CFE credential
  • To maintain CFE certification, credential holders must participate in Continuing Professional Education (CPE). The annual requirements are:









  • CFE credential holders must pay annual membership dues to keep their certification in active standing

  • CFE credential holders must comply with both the ACFE Code of Professional Ethics and Professional Standards.
  1. Minimum 20 CPE hours per year
  2. At least 10 hours must focus specifically on fraud detection and prevention
  3. 2 hours must cover ethics training
